Why the session is an hour long
An hour can feel like a long time, especially for neurodivergent children. But 1:1 SEN tuition isn't the same as standard tutoring, and the time is used differently.
Every session starts with a transition: time to settle into the space, shift from whatever came before, and feel ready to engage. For many children this alone can take several minutes, and rushing it undoes the rest of the session.
From there, we might play an introductory game, revisit something familiar, or simply talk, easing in before the more focused work begins. Attention spans vary hugely, and vary from session to session, so there's always room within the hour to refocus, take a break, or come back to something with fresh energy.
What stays constant is this: every session leaves time for your child to regulate, and time for genuine learning to happen. The balance between the two looks different every time, because it's shaped entirely around the child in front of us.
That's really the heart of 1:1 SEN tuition: it's bespoke, to the pupil, their needs, their interests, and their starting point. No two tuition sessions look the same, because no two pupils are the same.
